A collection of artwork by 15 students from the Drawing Studio’s 2004 summer program will be on display from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Wednesdays, October 26 through December 10 at the G.A.S.P. Gallery located at Utterback Magnet Middle School, 3233 S. Pinal Vista. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Oct. 28 at the gallery.

The artists, students from various TUSD schools, are students of the Drawing Studio’s 2004 summer program The Art of Summer III, an intense studio art program for students ages 13 to 18. Students drew musical instruments from direct observation, then redesigned the drawing into an abstraction in a visual equivalent of musical rhythms and sensations, or made a collographic plate, rolled the plate with ink and imprinted the result onto paper.

The Drawing Studio is an independent association of studio artists and students of art dedicated to the practice of drawing and related studies of composition, observation, and aesthetics. Courses are based on the philosophy that drawing is not simply a learned skill, but rather a continuing practice.

Utterback is a TUSD magnet school with a focus on the creative and performing arts. Fifteen students assume the responsibilities of curator, registrar, security, docent, installer, and publicist run the G.A.S.P. Gallery, which stands for Great Art by Students and Professionals. Art instructor Linda Poverman leads the project.
