Students throughout TUSD continue to rally support for recovery efforts in New York and
Washington, D.C., through numerous fund-raising and patriotic activities:
Bonillas Basic Curriculum Magnet School, 4757 E. Winsett: Students filled
firefighters boots, loaned to the school by a local fire department, with pennies
collected from family and friends for a total of $1,600. Half of the money will be used to
help purchase a new fire truck and the other half to assist the families of the NYC
firefighters.
Dodge Middle School, 5831 E. Pima St.: Working with the Tucson Kiwanis
Club, students raised $1,532 to say "We Care" about the families of the Sept. 11
tragedy in NYC.
Henry Elementary School, 650 N. Igo Way: Students and the Parent-Teacher
Association have been selling patriotic buttons reading "United We Stand
9-11-01" since Sept. 24. To date, they have raised more than $500 for the Red Cross.
Vail Middle School, 5350 E. 16th St.: Students in Gretchen
Averitts art classes designed patriotic magnets and selected the two best designs
by eighth-graders Carlos Garcia and Mallari Marley for commercial production
and sale. Minkus Advertising Specialties has partnered with the school to produce the
magnets, which will be sold for $2 each.
