Seventeen TUSD schools recently earned a total of $25,200 for demonstrating conservation, improving efficiency, and using renewable resources from
July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004 through the district’s
Resources Efficiency Awareness Program, also known as REAP. Reducing energy, water, and waste costs at 61 TUSD schools in fiscal year 2004 saved the district a total of $627,070 in total utility costs.
Begun in 1991, REAP was created to educate students and staff on how to conserve energy, water, and waste resources. It awards winning schools twice per year with $600 to $5,000 of capital monies which can be spent on a variety of school supplies including playground equipment, cafeteria tables, etc. The amount of money awarded is determined by the amount of money a school saves on utilities, if the school has received an Energy Star label from the federal government, and if conservation is included in the school's curriculum.
The following is a list of the winning schools and the monetary award they received:
Hohokam Middle, $5,000; Utterback Middle Magnet, $4,000;
Ford Elementary, $3,000; Blenman Elementary, Carson Middle, and Santa Rita
High, $2,000 each; Johnson Primary, Ochoa Elementary, Hughes
Elementary, Manzo Elementary, Holladay Intermediate Magnet, Sewell Elementary, Davis Elementary Magnet, Robins Elementary, Wakefield Middle, Soleng Tom Elementary, Ford Elementary, and Cavett
Elementary, $600 each.
