Anindo Marshall will teach students a form of African dance known as Dunham during her weeklong dance workshop
Nov. 3 through Nov. 7 at Rincon High School, 421 N. Arcadia Blvd., in the dance room of the north gym.
This dance residency will focus on the influence of African culture on American dance. The highlight of the week will be a master West African dance class along with live drumming from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the school’s cafeteria. Approximately 100 middle and high school students will participate.
The Dunham technique is a blend of ballet, modern, Afro-Haitian, and Afro-Cuban dance forms. Created by Katherine Dunham in the early 1900’s, this manner of dance illustrates West African culture.
Marshall, who was born in Kenya, is one of just 15 certified Dunham teachers worldwide. She is a master dancer and recording artist. Her film and television credits include “Survivor 3,” “Congo,” and “The Air Up There.” She has sung background vocals for celebrities such as Enrique Iglesias and Bunny Hull. Recently, her band ADAAWE opened for James Brown.
