Mission View Elementary School, 2600 S. Eighth Ave.,
will be presented with over 100 new books through a nationwide
literacy program sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottling Company
and Reading Is Fundamental at a presentation set for 1:45
p.m. Nov. 1 in the school's cafeteria.
The donation is made possible by Coca-Cola's Classroom
Library Collections program, which will place 10,000 new
book collections in disadvantaged schools and communities
where volunteers for Reading Is Fundamental, also known
as RIF, conduct programs. Local Coca-Cola representatives
will be at the school at 1 p.m. to read to students in
their classrooms before the presentation begins.
Each classroom set includes about 40 books that will be
available for check out to students in kindergarten through
third-grade. In addition, accompanying materials will
encourage parent involvement and activities that emphasize
the fun of reading.
In 2001, as part of an ongoing commitment to youth development,
the Coca-Cola Company provided a three-year $18 million
grant to RIF. This grant, the largest single corporate
contribution in RIF's history, is being used to share
the power of reading with millions of children across
the country through a variety of initiatives, including
the Classroom Library Collections program.
