Vail Middle School, 5350 E. 16th St., will hold a school-wide
assembly to kick-off its patriotic magnet fund-raiser to support Red Cross relief efforts
in New York City at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5.
Students and teachers dressed in red, white and blue will gather in the
center courtyard for a school-wide Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a formal recognition
of the students and sponsors involved in the magnet project.
Art students in Gretchen Averitts classes designed patriotic magnets and
selected the three best designs by eighth-graders Carlos Garcia, Mallari Marley and
Maureen Turner for commercial production and sale. Students will sell the
magnets for $2 each. In addition, magnet sales will be held Nov. 10 at the UA homecoming
game; Nov. 17-18 at Safeway (Wilmot and Golf Links); and Nov. 24-25 at Wal-Mart (Speedway
and Kolb).
Local businesses that partnered with the school for this project are Hanger Prosthetics
and Orthotics, Target, Jerry Bobs Family Restaurants, Gary & Palmer Attorneys at
Law. Additionally, Reuben Minkus, owner of Minkus Advertising Specialties, assisted with
production of the magnets, with printing costs offset by Office Depot.
"This project has enabled my students not only to participate in a national
community service, but also to truly understand the workings of our American economic
system," says Averitt. "They have taken a product from conceptual design through
marketing and finally to fruition when we present our donation to the Red Cross."
