Pueblo High Magnet School’s Tribal Images Club will celebrate “Native American Month” with a concert by 70s rock band Redbone from
7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 in the school’s auditorium, 3500 S. 12th Ave.
Cost for tickets is $15 for premium seating and $10 for general seating. Proceeds will assist in covering the band’s fee. Redbone’s performance is one of the many efforts by Tribal Images Club to highlight contemporary Native American culture throughout the school year.
Composed of Native American students from various tribes including Tohono O’odham, Yaqui and Navajo, Tribal Images Club encourages students to participate in various cultural activities including fund-raisers and presentations by Native American artists, speakers, performers and others. Ninety-five Native American students currently attend Pueblo.
Redbone was formed in 1968 in Los Angeles by two Yaqui brothers Pat Vegas (bass and vocals) and Lolly Vegas (guitar and vocals). Although the heritage of the band members was a mixture of Chicano and Native American, they emphasized the latter with their name and image. The band was signed with Epic Records in 1970 and went on to have two top forty hits, the biggest being their million-seller “Come and Get Your Love” in 1974.
Native American Month is dedicated to recognizing the intertribal cultures, the events and achievements of American Indians and Alaska Natives. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations have been issued each year since 1994. The theme for 2005 is "Respecting Tradition, Embracing a Healthy Future."
