Speakers and a program demonstration will be featured at the national launch of
Alcohol 101 for High School Seniors, an alcohol abuse prevention program for high school students, at
9:30 a.m. on Nov. 12 at Sahuaro High
School, 545 N. Camino Seco, in the auditorium.
Dr. Stan Paz, TUSD Superintendent; Judy Bowers, President-Elect of the American School Counselor Association; and Bill Georges, Vice President of The Century Council, will introduce the program, giving a demonstration, explaining how it operates, why it was created, and how it will be distributed.
Alcohol 101 for High School Seniors is an interactive CD-ROM with a companion educator’s guide that educates students about the importance of making responsible decisions concerning alcohol, and gives them a set of practical behavioral tools to help them maintain safety and control in a wide range of settings. During the simulation students are placed into virtual reality scenarios similar to situations they might encounter in real life, such as a party or behind the wheel of a car. Via interaction with animated characters within these virtual situations, they have the opportunity to make wrong decisions and observe the consequences through the safety of their computer screen. Subject lessons include alcohol overdose, drunk driving, and alcohol-induced date rape.
The program was created by The Century Council, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking, and the American School Counselor Association, a worldwide nonprofit group that supports the efforts of school counselors.
