Lawrence Intermediate School, 4850 W. Jeffrey Road, will host its third annual
Harvest Festival celebrating Yaqui cultural traditions from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.
20, in the school garden. The event is free and open to the public.
The festival is a community-wide celebration in the garden featuring student
demonstrations in math, science and literacy. In addition, representatives of the
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Arizona State Museum and Native Seeds/SEARCH will lead
demonstrations of food and arts and crafts prepared in the Yaqui tradition. Live music,
entertainment and tours of the garden also will be available.
Lawrence Intermediate Schools outdoor learning project is made possible in part
by the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, which pays the salary of the projects instructor.
"This multicultural celebration is a chance to share with the public how we use
our garden as an outdoor classroom for the purpose of enhancing classroom study in a
hands-on learning lab," says Dr. Anna Rivera, Lawrence principal.
