Fifth-grade students at Wheeler Elementary School, 1818 S. Avenida del Sol, will
display their scale model of the University of Arizona campus, complete with a parade of
floats representing career opportunities, from Nov. 19-21 at the school.
The project then will be moved to the UA Flandrau Science Center, 1601 E. University,
where a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception with UA President Peter Likins will be held
from 6-6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26. The model will remain on display there through Dec.
7.
"University by Design" was built from cardboard, shoeboxes and other recycled
materials to a scale of 1 centimeter equals 1 meter and measures approximately 10 by 6
meters. The project was designed to expose students to engineering challenges requiring
calculation, estimation and design skills. It also introduced students to the
opportunities and responsibilities of pursuing a college degree by requiring them to
research career interests.
Campus locations represented in the model include the College of Architecture and
Architectural Walk, Fine Arts complex, College of Law, McKale Center, Arizona Health
Sciences Center and the new underground Freshman Integrated Learning Center.
