The media is invited to attend the grand opening of ArtWORKS! Academys
classroom and studio space in El Con Mall (next to Robinsons May), 3601 E. Broadway
Blvd., from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. Speakers will include TUSD administrators
and Governing Board members, Vice Mayor Fred Ronstadt and other City of Tucson
dignitaries, and representatives of the Tucson-Pima Arts Council, Home Depot and El Con
Mall. In addition, ArtWORKS students will give demonstrations of their work.
Last November, ArtWORKS! Academy opened its gallery and retail store in time for the
holiday shopping season while students attended class in a temporary site operated by the
Tucson-Pima Arts Council. This year, students began the academic year in the newly
renovated classroom and studio space located behind the storefront.
ArtWORKS! Academy is an alternative education program that targets students who are
artistically talented but have struggled to commit academically to schoolwork. The
students meet their academic requirements to complete high school while working with
professional artists to produce hand-painted tiles and custom-painted furniture for show
and sale in the adjoining gallery and store. Currently, there are 20 students enrolled in
the program.
The program is a collaborative effort among TUSD, the Tucson-Pima Arts Council, the
City of Tucson and private business owners of El Con Mall.
