Students at Sewell Elementary School, 425 N. Sahuara, will gather with parents,
volunteers and local astronomers for an overnight meteor party beginning at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 17, on the schools north playground.
Dr. Ewen Whittaker, a noted astronomer and moon expert, will provide an overview of the
anticipated meteor shower and talk about the moon. Then students will rotate to three
different activity stations: moon stories with Sewell librarian Teri Moschetti; creation
of constellation models using film canisters; and viewing of stars through telescopes
provided by local astronomer Paul Olson. Students then will go to sleep in the school and
will be awakened when the meteor shower begins, which will be viewed out on the
playground.
The special event is made possible through the schools participation in Project
Astro, a national program that helps improve the teaching of astronomy and physical
science in fourth- through ninth-grade classrooms by linking local teachers with
professional or amateur astronomers. Partner organizations include the National Optical
Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and the National Science Foundation.
