Over 50 students from Utterback Middle Magnet School, 3233 S. Pinal Vista, will present kindergarten and first-grade students with student-made “reading backpacks” from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Friday, Nov. 19 at Ft. Lowell Elementary School, 5151 E. Pima St., in the community room.

The backpacks contain a book, tape recorder, and audio tape of the book recorded by Utterback students and will be available for check out to take home by the Ft. Lowell kindergarten and first-grade students. A $2,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona funded the project.

During the event Utterback students will perform a play to explain how the audio books were recorded. Afterwards they will read aloud to the elementary students.

The purpose of the project is to promote literacy in students who have limited parental support at home or whose parents do not have a strong command of the English language.
