Teachers and students will be moving to the newly constructed Banks Elementary
School, 3200 S. Lead Flower, at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 26. The initial date for completion
had been set for January 2003.
About 350 students, 16 teachers and 20 staff members will board buses from their
temporary locations at Southwest Education Center, 6855 S. Mark Rd., and Lawrence
Intermediate, 4850 W. Jeffrey Rd., and travel to the new school. Students will have
opportunities to tour the school and have their first meal in the cafeteria. Teachers will
set up their classrooms beginning Nov. 22. The official dedication of the school will be
held Feb. 1.
Laura Banks Elementary is named after Dr. Laura Nobles Banks, an educator for almost
forty years. She served TUSD as a teacher, curriculum specialist, principal, and
regional superintendent. She is recognized for her educational leadership locally
and nationally. Although Dr. Banks is retired, she continues to do work on behalf of
the public education system.
