Miles Exploratory Learning Center students will don gloves, masks and
aprons Tuesday, November 20, to sort through the school's non-cafeteria
trash to determine how much recyclable white paper ends up in the garbage.
The school waste audit will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the loading dock area on
the south side of Miles ELC, 1403 E. Broadway Boulevard.
Miles is one of 15 schools in Tucson Unified School District (TUSD)
participating in a voluntary, no-cost white paper recycling pilot program
jointly sponsored by the school district's Resources Efficiency Awareness
Program (REAP), the City of Tucson Solid Waste Management Department
(SWMD), and Recycle America, a division of Waste Management.
"Doing waste audits gives students a real 'hands-on' feel for
what's in their waste stream," said Wilson Hughes, SWMD waste
reduction planner. "They see how much white paper they can keep out
of their garbage and put into recycling."
Similar waste audits at Rincon/University High School last spring and
Mansfeld Middle School last week revealed that about 25 percent of their
non-cafeteria waste consisted of white paper. As part of the paper
recycling pilot program, students learn that it takes 17 trees to make a
ton of virgin paper, and it requires 60 percent more energy than making
recycled paper.
TUSD schools involved in the paper recycling pilot program include:
Davidson, Miles, Richey, Roberts, Smith, Van Buskirk, Wheeler, and Wright
Elementary Schools; Carson, Mansfeld, and Safford Middle Schools, and
Rincon/University, Cholla, Palo Verde, and Santa Rita High Schools.
