The Arizona Department of Commerce awarded TUSD with its 2002 Governor's Award of Excellence for Energy Efficiency and the 2002 Energy Advocate of the Year Award at a luncheon held Nov. 19 at the Sheraton Mesa Hotel in Mesa.
The Excellence for Energy award recognizes the efforts and achievements of the public sector in energy conservation, efficiency and renewable energy. TUSD was honored for its Resources Efficiency Awareness Program, also known as REAP, which has saved the district approximately $300,000 a year in avoided utility costs through a combination of education and equipment retrofits.
TUSD Natural Resources Manager, Doug Crockett, received the Energy Advocate Award, which recognizes individuals for their extraordinary endeavors in promoting energy conservation. He oversees REAP and other energy saving projects in the district.
Through REAP, TUSD has collaborated with local utility companies and other community sponsors to develop a wide variety of successful projects including: Commingled Recycling in Schools Project, Reclaimed Water Conversion Project, and Tucson Solar Schools Project. Student energy patrols, energy management control systems, water auditing, environmental education, travel reduction, alternative fuel vehicles, natural lighting, security lighting, and solar photovoltaics have all contributed to utility savings in addition to positive local, state and national recognition.
