Twenty-two students from Joyce M. Drake Alternative Middle School, 445 S. Park, will join with seniors from B’nai B’rith Covenant House to celebrate their first annual Thanksgiving dinner together, from
1 to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 21, at B’nai B’rith Covenant
House, 4414 E. 2nd.
Drake, in partnership with the Imagine Project, was awarded a $10,000 cross-generational mentoring grant from the United Way to be used over the next two years. The grant is being utilized for a youth mentoring program between Drake and B’nai B’rith Covenant House, in which seniors are becoming positive role models for Drake students. Through this cross-generational mentoring program, titled Helping Hearts, both students and seniors are learning from and about one another, breaking the generational gap that exists.
At the Thanksgiving celebration students and mentors will cook and feast together. Through the Helping Hearts program, students regularly visit the B’nai B’rith Covenant House, spending each Friday there for an hour and a half. Weekly activities vary and include cooking, arts and crafts, dancing, group discussions, and more.
The Imagine Project is a program of Information and Referral Services, a human services organization that provides community services to southern Arizonans. The Imagine Project works with at-risk youth to develop healthy, resilient children who are able to effectively deal with life’s challenges.
