Over 100 students at Carrillo Magnet School, 440 S. Main Ave., will participate in the school's 66th Annual Las Posadas celebration beginning at 5 p.m. Dec. 17.
Mexican pastries, food and hot chocolate will be served beginning at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., students dressed as peasants, angels and other characters will begin their half hour procession through Barrio El
Hoyo.
Since 1936, the "Las Posadas" nativity pageant has taken place in the school neighborhood each December. The late L. Marguerite Collier, a former vocal music teacher at Carrillo Elementary School, began the tradition of "Las Posadas" at Carrillo. Dozens of students volunteer annually to participate in this culturally enriching activity, which is supported by fund-raisers held by parents. The school's music specialist, Jorge Pastana, will oversee this year's celebration.
"Las Posadas" is a Mexican tradition celebrated every evening from December 16 to 24. These celebrations commemorate Mary and Joseph's difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. "Posada" in Spanish means inn.
