Tucson High Magnet School junior Mayra Guillen has been invited to serve as an honorary standard bearer at the Target World Challenge golf tournament, which takes place
Dec. 11 through Dec. 14 at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and will be aired live on both the ABC and USA television networks.
Mayra, one of only 16 students chosen from across the nation, will serve as a standard bearer for one of the eight professional golf teams competing in the tournament.
She was chosen as a result of her participation in the Tiger Woods Start Something program, which aids children ages eight through 17 in developing core values and goals, and building strategies to achieve these goals. Mayra, along with eight other TUSD students, received a total of $10,000 in scholarship money from the program.
In addition to Mayra, Alfonso Reyes, Hollinger; Moslin Cruz, Pistor; Daphne Nabatanzi, Doolen; and Dillon Mutyaba, Davidson, funded a cultural exchange trip to the Hopi reservation with their scholarships. Sandy Santizo, Palo Verde; Santos Hernandez, Roskruge; and Jennifer Cruz, Maxwell, recently visited Washington, D.C. to aid in gaining support for a torture victim’s relief bill that was later passed through congress. Palo Verde graduate Jorge Santizo utilized his scholarship to attend a leadership conference in Washington, D.C.
All of these students became involved with the Start Something program through Owl and Panther Writing from the Darkness, a writing and leadership program for children sponsored by the Hopi Foundation’s Center for Prevention and Resolution of Violence.
