Over 100 students at Carrillo Magnet School, 440 S. Main Ave., will participate
in the schools 65th Annual Las Posadas celebration beginning at 5
p.m. Dec. 18.
Mexican pastries, food and hot chocolate will be served beginning at 5 p.m. Afterwards,
a half hour procession will then proceed through Barrio El Hoyo.
Carrillo students will also hold a special presentation of the Las Posadas at 2:30
p.m. Dec. 16 at Old Tucson Studios.
Since 1936, the las posadas nativity pageant has taken place in the school
neighborhood each December. The late L. Marguerite Collier, a former vocal music teacher
at Carrillo Elementary School, began the tradition of las posadas at Carrillo.
Dozens of students volunteer annually to participate in this culturally enriching
activity, which is supported by fund-raisers held by parents.
Las posadas is a Mexican tradition in which the posadas are celebrated
every evening from December 16 to 24. These celebrations commemorate Mary and Joseph's
difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. "Posada" in
Spanish means inn.
