Carrillo To Host Annual Las Posadas Celebration

Over 100 students from Carrillo Intermediate Magnet School will participate in the school’s 66th Annual Las Posadas celebration beginning at 5 p.m. Dec. 16 in the school’s cafeteria, 440 S. Main Ave.

Mexican pastries, food and hot chocolate will be served beginning at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., students dressed as peasants, angels and other characters will begin their 45-minute procession through the historic district Barrio El Hoyo.

Since 1937, the “Las Posadas” nativity pageant has taken place in the school neighborhood each December. The late L. Marguerite Collier, a former vocal music teacher at Carrillo Elementary School, began the tradition of “Las Posadas” at the school. Dozens of students volunteer annually to participate in this culturally enriching activity, which is supported by fund-raisers held by parents. 

“Las Posadas” is a Mexican tradition celebrated every evening from December 16 to 24. These celebrations commemorate Mary and Joseph's difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. "Posada" means inn in Spanish.
