A collection of rugs made by Old Pueblo Rug Hookers will be on display from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, and
from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 10 through Feb. 17 at the G.A.S.P. Gallery located at Utterback Magnet Middle School, 3233 S. Pinal Vista. An opening reception will be held from
6 to 7 p.m., Jan. 20 at the gallery.
Rug hooking is the art of using a hooked-shaped tool to pull strips of material, often wool or yarn, through a backing to form loops on the top surface. The foundation fabric is usually linen, burlap or cotton monk’s cloth. Traditional rug hooking has existed in the United States for approximately 200 to 300 years. The rugs were used on floors in the summer and on beds in the winter for warmth.
Old Pueblo Rug Hookers became the 75th chapter of the National Association of Traditional Hooking Artists on Nov. 7, 2000. The group’s objective is to preserve and encourage the art of rug hooking. Presently, Old Pueblo Rug Hookers consists of 30 members that meet twice a month.
Utterback is a TUSD magnet school with a focus on the creative and performing arts. Fifteen students assume the responsibilities of curator, registrar, security, docent, installer, and publicist run the G.A.S.P. Gallery, which stands for Great Art by Students and Professionals. Art instructor Linda Poverman leads the project.
