1996 Olympic Gold Medal gymnast Kerri Strug will visit Robison Elementary School,
2745 E. 18th St., for a special school assembly at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 19.
Joined by her father, local cardiologist Dr. Burt Strug, and other members of the
Tucson Rotary Club, Strug will present cash awards to Robison students who participated in
the Rotarys Earn to Learn Reading Mentor program. Through this program, which teams
Rotarians with young readers for one-on-one mentoring sessions, students are given a
savings deposit bankbook and credited $1 for each book completed. At the end of each
10-week session, students receive a check from the Rotary totaling the number of books
read.
In addition, Strug will present to the school library a check for $5,000, half of her
winnings for her upcoming appearance (date TBA) on the NBC television game show, "The
Weakest Link." (Strug has agreed to donate the other half to Wakefield Middle
School.)
