TUSD Governing Board Calls for Budget Override Election

On May 13, 2008, the TUSD Governing Board of Tucson Unified School District, ordered and called for a Budget Override Election to be held in and for the Tucson Unified School District on November 4, 2008.

On July 8, 2008, the TUSD Governing Board adopted the following argument in support of the budget override:

The importance of taxpayer support for public education has never been greater. There are 11 unified school districts in Pima County; Tucson Unified is one of only two unified districts in the county that does not operate on a taxpayer-supported override budget. This is an opportunity for Tucsonans to make an investment in today's students who are the future. This ballot item is focused on three vitally important areas to student success:

  1. stipends for highly qualified and effective teachers and classroom personnel trained in the areas of math, science, special education and other hard-to-fill positions;
  2. strategically placed small class sizes; and
  3. strategic expansion of arts integration in K-8 schools based on the award-winning Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) program, which has proven to increase student achievement.

This is an opportunity for the residents of Tucson to ensure its major public school district remains competitive and continues to provide the educational opportunities to make our children successful adults in the global economy.

Estimated Tax Rate per $100 of Assessed Valuation to fund Budget Override = $0.7227
