Kindergarten at Our Schools

Your Journey Starts at Kinder

When entering a Tucson Unified kindergarten classroom, you lead your child as they take an important step on their journey to adulthood.

For many children, this will be their first time apart from family. For some, they will be stepping from the care of a preschool or daycare into a bigger community.

For all children, they will learn to rely on themselves, other children, and their teachers as part of a class, school, and education system.

Kindergarten is the launchpad for your child as they begin to navigate the world more independently.

5-Year Olds!

To attend, your child must be 5 before September 1 of the current school year for kindergarten and 6 before September 1 for first grade.

All Tucson Unified kindergartens are Free, All-Day (6 hr.), 5-days-a-week, learning spaces which offer healthy breakfast and lunch and safe transportation.

What Kids Do & Achieve

Your child’s day will include:

  • Community time to begin each day
  • Whole group learning time for all subjects
  • Learning in small groups tailored to their needs for reading and math
  • Science projects in small groups
  • Regular structured movement activity and recess play times
Many of our teachers will say, by the end of the kindergarten year the most valuable skill children can learn is how to solve problems together
