Sam Hughes Elementary School at a Glance

Sam Hughes Logo
Sam Hughes Elementary challenges students academically and promotes leadership, character-building and perseverance. All grades embark on “learning expeditions” for a semester or a school year that enable them to explore subjects in depth.

Curiosity and inquiry are encouraged at Sam Hughes, and the goal is to teach children to be lifelong learners who act locally and think globally. We are an Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) school, which means we use an arts-integrated curriculum. We also offer chess, physical education, full-day kindergarten and before- and after-school programs.
RJ Lundstrom RJ Lundstrom (Interim Principal)

Lifelong educator of high school aged youth as a teacher, coach, administrator, and employer. I took the less traveled road to education having received my Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and History. I returned to school and completed a post-Bac teacher certification program and taught History, American Government/Economics as a teacher at Catalina Magnet and Sahuaro High Schools. I was a high school and club swim coach for over 25 years with seven state championships and numerous All-American swimmers. I have developed programs outside of education that helped identify, train, and assist youth with employment opportunities. During this time, I also managed Aquatic programs in a variety of settings, both public and private. I taught lifeguarding classes, CPR/First Aid, and Water Safety Instructor courses to over 2500 students. I was recognized for 20 years of Instructional Service by the Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross in 2001. I received a Master’s in Education Leadership from Grand Canyon University in 2010 and became a high school administrator at Sahuaro High School in 2012. Under my leadership our school won 3 Superintendent Cups as the best athletic program in the district. I retired in June of 2023 and returned to administration work at Sam Hughes as an Interim Principal while my good friend, Ms. Bolasky is out on maternity leave. I have served youth with the desire to provide school-aged students with the opportunity to reach their potential for my entire adult life and will continue to do so.
