Certified Pay Schedule

Starting Salary

The starting salary for the 2020-2021 school year is $41,200.

Salary Placement

Newly employed MBUs shall be placed on the appropriate salary schedule at a step that reflects their previous experience. Acceptable experience is limited to that gained within the last fifteen (15) years. Experience prior to earning a Bachelor's Degree and certification shall not be credited to an employee for salary purposes.

Newly employed MBUs shall be given credit for teaching experience in the Peace Corps, overseas, in private and public schools, and in accredited junior colleges or universities.

  1. Vocational teachers with degrees shall also be allowed credit for approved work experience in their teaching fields.
  2. Social workers shall receive credit for experience gained prior to meeting minimum certification requirements (Master's Degree) but subsequent to receipt of Bachelor's Degree.
  3. Experience credit for noncertified MBUs must be subsequent to the MBU's holding the appropriate credentials for the position.

Dual Language Recruitment and Retention

Tucson Unified School District will pay a Dual-Language Recruitment and Retention Incentive Stipend of $5000 that will be available to new-to-the-District incoming certified teachers and to certified teachers who currently work for the District that meet the following criteria:

  • The teacher must work for the District in a dual-language classroom and attend the required two-way dual language professional development during the school year.
  • The teacher must have a Teacher Certificate with Spanish bilingual endorsement from the Arizona Department of Education

* Salary is based on a 207-day contract which includes 20 paid holidays, 7.5 hour work schedule with a duty-free lunch and separate planning period. For more information about employment terms, see Consensus Agreement (in PDF).
* New teachers attend New Teacher Induction training as part of the first regular contract.
* Minimum pay includes $4,400 of Prop 301 funding. Separate 301 Pay for Performance is also available annually with achievement of approved Plan goals. See the Prop 301 webpages for more information.
* Pay may be increased annually by $500 with Governing Board Approval

Special Ed**




Math, Science, and Special Ed Stipends

The Math, Science, and Special Ed stipends are one-time hiring incentives, paid to teachers in those subject areas who are new to the district. These stipends are paid in two parts: The first half is paid upon completion of the fall semester in December and the second half is paid out upon completion of the spring semester in May.

Dual Language Stipend

The Dual Language stipend is a recruitment and retention stipend. The amount is determined by the number of Dual Language classes a teacher is teaching, with the maximum amount being $5,000. This stipend is paid out on the same schedule (end of fall semester, and end of spring semester) as the other stipends.

Magnet Stipends

Elementary, K-8 and Middle Schools: one time hiring incentive for new to the district teachers hired at magnet schools.
High Schools: one time hiring incentive for new to the district teachers hired at magnet high schools and in magnet strand positions.
