Writing: Prepare a multimedia presentation on the history of ice cream and the role that Augustus Jackson played in the United States. Include information about the dessert’s Chinese origins and some of the details presented in the Guardian article.

Lesson 1: Conduct a close reading of the two linked articles, jotting down any questions, comments or personal connections you may make as you read.

Lesson 2: Research the history of ice cream and compose a multimedia report on the topic, using text as well as images, music and/or video clips to communicate your findings. Include information from the two articles named in this assignment and from at least two other sources.

Enrichment Activity

Use the images shown on the following page to help you recall some of the happiest memories you have of enjoying desserts and other foods with your family. Over the course of this week, keep a journal each day in which you use vivid language to record some of your favorite food memories. Use descriptive language to paint the images in readers’ minds and to capture as many details as you can. Each entry should be at least one paragraph in length and may also contain drawings, poems, or lists of places and names associated with each memory.
