Independent Practice

1) I randomly select 25 students’ Math SAT scores and find the mean to be 600 and standard deviation is 50. Critical value is 2.064. Find a 95% Confidence Interval and interpret.

2) I randomly select 35 students’ English SAT scores and find the mean to be 700 and standard deviation is 40. Critical value is 2.042. Find a 95% Confidence Interval and interpret.

3) I randomly select 200 students’ Math SAT scores and find the mean to be 700 and standard deviation is 30. Critical value is 1.984. Find a 95% Confidence Interval and interpret.

4) I randomly select 150 students’ English SAT scores and find the mean to be 650 and standard deviation is 60. Critical value is 1.984. Find a 95% Confidence Interval and interpret.

5) You sample 12 bugs and find the sample mean is 2.40 cm and standard deviation is 0.2 cm. Critical value is 2.201. Find a 95% Confidence Interval and interpret.

Self-Check / Formative Assessment

We take a sample of 500 men in Tucson. We find that the average height of those men is 68 inches and the standard deviation is 1.28 inches. The critical value for a 95% confidence level is 1.984

Key Vocabulary / Formulas/ Things to Remember

Standard Deviation (standard error):

σ=sn√

Population: a set of similar items or events which is of interest for some question or experiment

x− is the sample mean

Parameter: numbers that describe a population

Confidence Interval: defines a range of values that you can be ___% certain contains the population parameter.
t∗ = critical value

Sample: a set of individuals or objects collected or selected from a population

Margin of Error: critical value * standard error

Statistic: number calculated from a sample

Confidence Level: refers to the percentage of all possible samples that can be expected to include the true population parameter
