How to Use This Page

This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week's learning at home. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that your child will be able to do. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help your child master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another. These activities fit into the Sample Dailly Schedule.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Your child DOES NOT have to complete all activities listed for each subject.
  • Activities have been identified to give your child choice and variety.
  • Your child's teacher may suggest other activities more appropriate for your child.

Getting Ready to Read

Big Question: What is justice

Go to page Unit 4 pg. 228-229 in your on-line student book.

Learn to make inferences:

(An inference is a conclusion reached based on evidence and reasoning.) Look at the picture on pg. 228. Write down details about what is happening in the picture. Make an inference or a guess about what will happen next. Read My Grandfather My Hero. Next locate the 2 red arrows on the right side of the text. Write 2 inferences based on the information you read at the 2 red arrows.

Reading the Selection

Re-read the story Crossing Bok Chitto in the on-line student book on pages 230-247.

Click on the volume icon to hear the story read out loud.

Click on the mouse icon for Comprehension coach to record reading the story and click on the red question icon to help with understanding.

Meet the author of the story on pg-245. Complete the Think and Respond and Reread and Retell pgs. 246 and 247 in your online Student Book.

On Resources Icon, go to Unit 4 then Teamwork Activities. Choose Card 27 Web link on Cesar Chavez. Read the articles and then work on practice book: Harvesting Hope pgs. 4.13 and 4.15

Vocabulary and Phonics Practice

Look at the Key word diagrams in your online student book pg. 224 - 227. Share your new knowledge of the words below by making flash cards out of the words. Draw a picture on back of card to represent the word when possible. Challenge a family member to tell you what the word means to them and use it in complete sentences. Start a meaningful conversation. Help them if needed.

Writing
What might Little Mo say to Martha Tom after his family escapes to freedom Write a letter from Little Mo to Martha Tom. Use key words to thank her for her help. Next write a letter to someone to thank them for something.

Parts to a Thank you letter:

  • Heading
  • Greeting
  • Body
  • Closing
  • Signature

Oral Language

Talk to a family member about a hero in your life or in their lives. What makes them a hero Remember to use complete sentences when asking or answering questions.
