Magee Odyssey of the Mind Teams at State Competition
4 teams headed to world competition The latest update is here.
Magee is an academically focused school with high expectations and a challenging and supportive environment. While we have one of the largest attendance areas for middle schools in TUSD, about a third of the approximately 650 students at Magee are open-enrolled, meaning that our students come from all over Tucson.
Magee has expanded its opportunities in all things STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). In our electives department, we offer Art, Theatre, Computer Science, Yearbook, Student Council, PE, Spanish, AVID and, new this year, Robotics. We also offer grade-level and advanced coursework in math and science, including Algebra for high school credit. Additionally, Magee is the only middle school in TUSD that offers 3 levels of band and orchestra.
In order to encourage our students to be more involved and part of our campus community, we offer quite a few clubs and sports for them to participate in. Our most notable club is Odyssey of the Mind. This award-winning program challenges students to come up with creative solutions to designated problems developing their skills in problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork. Teams from Magee have won the Arizona State Championship for 14 years straight and have gone on to compete in the World Competitions, placing as high as 3rd. This last world competition, which took place at the end of May, proved to be the most rewarding year yet with two teams winning 3rd place in Division II. Mrs. Marjorie Letson, the 2016 TUSD Middle School Teacher of the Year, is the sponsor of this incredible program.
Finally, we offer our students several opportunities for travel. Our 6th graders have the opportunity to participate in the Washington, D.C. Club and then travel to our nation's capital for a 4 day trip. Our 7th graders can travel to CIMI (Catalina Island Marine Institute) for an introduction to marine biology. And this past summer, our Roaming Roadrunners, led by Mr. Chris Ryan, had an amazingly fun trip to Italy where they learned some pretty amazing facts about that country's culture and history. All of these trips have costs associated with them, and you can find out more by contacting one of these three dedicated and awesome teachers.
