Safford Logo
Located in historic downtown Tucson, Safford offers quality inquiry-based education for students in grades K-8. Our students learn through global contexts and world concepts, exploring big ideas to find solutions for real-world problems. Through our learning activities, we ask students to examine the world and consider what they can do to make it a better place.
Dr. Katherine Kuhn Dr. Katherine Kuhn
Dr. Katherine Kuhn is a homegrown product of TUSD1, where she attended Sewell Elementary and Townsend Middle School during the school day and then would go to Safford K-8 for afterschool. Dr. Kuhn is a lifelong learner, graduating from the University of Arizona with her bachelor's in psychology and master's in Rehabilitation Counseling for the Deaf. Dr. Kuhn continued her education at Grand Canyon University for her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Special Education. In addition to her personal and professional commitment to Special Education, she also has a strong background in Gifted Education, Counseling strategies, an emphasis on community partnerships and foundational learning. Dr. Kuhn is dedicated to bringing the highest quality education to the Safford Community School of Excellence, as her love for the Armory Park area and this school is what propelled her to be a TUSD1 Principal. Dr. Kuhn has a strong belief that all students can and will succeed given the foundational skills needed to reach the high expectations of their teachers and families. At Safford, Dr. Kuhn says often, "We teach our students how to think, not what to think". The guiding belief that once a student can use their own opinions, think through complex problems and persevere through difficult processes, produces a student that is unstoppable. The 24-25 School Year will be Dr. Kuhn's fourth year as the Principal at Safford. Watching the growth of the students, families and the community involvement has been a source of pride for her, second only to watching her son and daughter grow up and become accomplished professionals and kind people.
