How to Use This Page

This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week's learning at home. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that your child will be able to do. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help your child master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another. These activities fit into the Sample Dailly Schedule.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Your child DOES NOT have to complete all activities listed for each subject.
  • Activities have been identified to give your child choice and variety.
  • Your child's teacher may suggest other activities more appropriate for your child.

1stGrade Science-Social Studies

Week 4 April 27-May 1

Week 4 Theme: Engineering Semana 4: Ingenieria
Students will be able to:

  • develop and use models about how living things use resources to grow and survive; design and evaluate habitats for organisms using Earth materials.
  • carry out investigations which demonstrate how equal forces can balance objects and how unequal forces can push, pull or twist objects, making them change their speed, direction or shape.

Key/clave:

Outside Learning-*
*Observe ants/prairie dogs/birds as they work around their habitat – what materials are they moving? Where are they taking the materials? What do you think they will do with those materials?

Science Lesson -$
Building a Bridge. Watch this SciShowKids video – What Makes a Bridge so Strong? Check out the video, and try to make your own bridges with things found around your house!

STEAM lesson-*
Design your very own roller coaster using materials from home, such as canisters, soup cans, or cardboard. Using an item that rolls, such as a toy car, marble, or golf ball, try out your design. Did it work well? Can you change something about your design to help the toy roll to the end? Use these Design Challenges and draw your rollercoaster when complete!

Build It: Hands-on Activity - *
Using materials at home
*Using natural objects (grass, leaves, sticks, rocks, etc.) build a small structure that could house an insect or animal. Think about where the animal would build the structure and how the insect or animal would gather the materials.
