This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that you work on. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help you practice and master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another.

ELA - Grade 12 - Week Two

12th Grade ELA 

Week 2 April 6-April 10, 2020

Objectives: Students will be able to:  

  • read a text to determine an author’s point of view, cite evidence from these texts, personal experience, literature, art, or history to produce narrative that analyzes and reflects on the theme of resilience. 

Lessons:

Lesson 1: Read and annotate “Characteristics of Resilient People” and answer both multiple choice and short answer questions. 

Lesson 2: Read and annotate “How Resilience Works” and answer both multiple choice and short answer questions.  

Lesson 3: Choose 2 of the writing activities under Writing to complete.   

 Writing: Choose 2 of the following options to complete. 

Your writing should focus on how people successfully rebound from the challenges they face in everyday life. Connect your writing to the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically how you, your friends, and family might show resilience. Each written response should use appropriate spelling, grammar, and punctuation 

Keep a journal about your experiences with social distancing. Your journal should have at least four entries a week. Each entry should be at least one paragraph. 

Options:

  1. Write a song
  2. Interview someone in the house
  3. Write a short story or poem 
  4. Write a letter to a relative or other person
  5. Draw an advertisement for resiliency
  6. Write about a news story you’ve seen or read
  7. Write a news article
  8. Use one of the article’s discussion questions as an essay prompt, write a 3-5 paragraph argumentative or persuasive essay.

Vocabulary

Immutable (adjective): unchanging over time or unable to be changed 

Scruple (noun): a feeling of doubt or hesitation regarding the morality of an action  

Informational (adjective):  relating to or characterized by facts about something 

Resilience (noun):  the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
