In mid-April, students at Blenman Elementary got to time travel. Well, the past came to them.
Students and staff were joined by alumni and community members during a school-wide assembly as the midtown school unearthed a time capsule that was buried five feet underground by students and staff in the year 2000.
The historic event was met with plenty of cheers every time an item was pulled out. The capsule included VHS tapes, a 1999-2000 yearbook, small pictures of every class that year, notes and artwork from students, and more. Some of the former students had even written their name on the outside of the capsule.
The event was made even more special as two staff members – Ms. Bloom and Ms. Espinoza – worked for the school when the capsule was buried and continue to work there, being part of opening the capsule.
Blenman Elementary plans to fill a new time capsule with items from today that will be buried by the end of the school year, and with directions to not open until 2050.
Let’s see what the students of the future think of what the current students put in there!
