Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help you practice and master those skills. Weekly Packet

Students will be able to:

  • respond to reading selections and videos about celebrations by writing an essay contrasting and comparing two celebrations.
  • cite evidence from texts in their essay.
  • research and present information about celebrations.
  • write complete sentences using relative and demonstrative pronouns and subordinating conjunctions.

Lesson 1: Read “Celebrating Cinco De Mayo” and answer the multiple choice and short answer written questions.
Lesson 2: Read “All of Spain celebrates Three Kings Day” and answer the multiple choice and short answer written questions.

Writing
After reading and answering questions about “Cinco De Mayo” and “Spain Celebrates Three Kings” and after watching videos about these same two subjects, complete the prompt:

  • Write an essay with at least three paragraphs to compare the two celebrations from the reading and videos.  Include evidence from both stories in your essay to illustrate how the celebrations are alike and how they are different from each other.

Continue with your personal journals about your experiences with social distancing.  Include at least three entries each week.

Enrichment Activities
1)  Watch this video about the history of Three Kings Day and consider the history, sights, sounds, foods, and traditions that are celebrated.  Prepare to use this information for composing your essay in the writing assignment.

Vocabulary
Conjunction (noun): a word that joins together sentences, clauses, phrases, or words
Ferocious (adjective): very fierce or violent
Identity (noun): the qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others
Tribute (noun): something that you say, give, or do to show respect or affection for someone
Bicultural (adjective): having or combining the cultural attitudes and customs of two nations, peoples, or ethnic groups
Invade (verb): to enter (a place, such as a foreign country) in order to take control by military force
