  • calculate the axis of symmetry when given a quadratic equation in standard form and use that x-value to find the vertex of the parabola.
  • compare different graphs of quadratic functions.

Quadratic Equation in Standard Form:
equations in the form ax2+bx+c=0

Axis of Symmetry:
x= −b2a

The axis of symmetry of a parabola is a vertical line that divides the parabola into two congruent halves. The axis of symmetry always passes through the vertex of the parabola.

Vertex: The vertex of a parabola is the point where the parabola crosses its axis of symmetry. If the coefficient of the x2 term is positive, the vertex will be the lowest point on the graph, the point at the bottom of the “U-shaped”. If the coefficient of the x2 term is negative, the vertex will be the highest point on the graph, the point at the top of the “∩” shaped.

Coefficients: a numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression (e.g., the 5 in 5x).
