High School

Week 1 March 30-April 3

Topic:  Experimental Design and Variables

  • I can describe the factors that scientists consider when designing a controlled experiment
  • I can identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables in an experiment
  • I can design a controlled experiment

Lessons and Student Instructions

Lesson 1:  Watch the video lesson “Introduction to Experimental Design” and take the practice quiz.

Complete the “Experimental Variables POGIL Packet”

Lesson 2:  Choose one of the following applications and follow the prompts in the box:

     -Interactive Video:  Elephant Communication

     -Virtual Experiments

     -Experimental Design Practice

Extensions and Support Videos are provided to extend your learning.

Video Lesson

Video: Introduction to Experimental Design

Practice quiz: Experimental Design and Bias

Application: Interactive Video

Watch the interactive video below about a controlled experiment studying elephant communication and respond to the prompts in the video.

Elephant Communication – Interactive Video

Extension:  Watch the elephants at the Reid Park Zoo on the Elephant Cam.  Do you notice any evidence of elephants communicating by air or ground vibrations? Think of a research question you could test virtually.  Design your experiment and identify the variables.  Conduct the experiment, if possible, using virtual observation data from the zoo cams.

Supplemental Videos

Watch one or more of these videos for additional explanation or practice as needed:

Scientific Method Video (English and Spanish)

Independent and Dependent Variables Made Easy!

Identifying Variables with Mythbusters

Application: Virtual Experiments

Try designing and conducting your own controlled experiment in one of the virtual labs below.

Virtual experiment– The Chirping Cricket

Virtual experiment – Clothing color and heat absorption

Application:  Experimental Design Practice

Choose one of the experimental questions and explain how you would design a controlled experiment to test this.  Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables.

Experimental Design Practice

Ask a research question about something that interests you and develop a hypothesis.  Design a controlled experiment to test your hypothesis. Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables. (You do not need to do the experiment.)

Variable:  Any condition that may cause a change in the system being studied.

Hypothesis:  A testable explanation.

Controlled experiment: An experiment in which only one variable is changed to ensure that the effect of only that one variable can be measured.

Independent Variable: The variable changed by the experimenter.

Controlled variables (constants): Variables that are not being studied.  These should be kept constant during an experiment to avoid changing the outcome.

Dependent variable: The variable that changes as a result of the independent variable and is measured during the experiment to collect data.
