Weekly Packet

Topic: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Learning Objectives: Student will be able to:

  • describe how plants make sugar through the process of photosynthesis
  • describe how organisms get energy from food through the process of cellular respiration
  • make connections between the reactants and products of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
  • explain the importance of photosynthesis and cellular respiration to life on our planet

Lessons and Student Instructions

Extensions and Additional Resources
are provided for review and to extend your learning.

Create your own video tutorial, animation, song, or poem for other students, explaining photosynthesis and/or cellular respiration.

Hacking photosynthesis for a greener planet

Photosynthesis – chemical process that takes place in cells of plants; converts sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen

Cellular Respiration – chemical process that takes place in cells of organisms; converts sugar and oxygen into usable energy (ATP), carbon dioxide and water
Chloroplast - organelle in cells of photosynthetic organisms where photosynthesis takes place

Mitochondria – organelle in eukaryotic cells where cellular respiration takes place

Autotrophs – organisms that can make their own food from sunlight and/or inorganic compounds
Heterotrophs – organisms that must consume other organisms for food
