Printable Version - Week Two Learning Board (in PDF)

11th/12th Grade ELA

Week 2 April 6-10, 2020

Objectives: Students will be able to
Read two different articles relating to immigrants and the American Dream, and then select one to be the basis for a 4-5 paragraph argumentative essay, citing evidence from the selected text and using appropriate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Text from Medium.com
A Flawed Hero
by Francisco Valladares

Video from pbsmedia.org
The Undocumented & the American Dream
by PBS

Writing: The American Dream is the idea that anyone living in America has the opportunity to attain their highest aspirations. After reflecting on the assigned article and video, consider how the two works portray undocumented immigrants. Then use the information you obtained to compose an argumentative essay.

Lesson 1: “A Flawed Hero” and take notes on the article’s comments about the views César Chávez had concerning undocumented immigrants.

Lesson 2:
View the short video “The Undocumented and the American Dream” and take notes on the speaker’s portrayal of his experience as an undocumented immigrant.

Lesson 3: Compose a well-developed 4-5 paragraph argumentative essay in response to this question: Should undocumented immigrants have a right to the American Dream?

Enrichment Activity

Do a web search for “undocumented immigrants” and randomly select three of the sites that come up. How are such immigrants depicted in each site? Are they characterized as contributors to our economy or as a drag on our economy? Keep a journal in which you identify each site and quote some of the material the site contains. Use your judgment to determine how biased or unbiased each site appears.
