High School Science

Week 2 April 6-10

 Topic: Organizing Data

Science Objectives: Students will…

  • sort raw data into an organized data table for analysis of patterns or trends.
  • determine which type of graph (scatter plot or bar graph) will best represent a set of data.
  • plot data on a scatter plot or bar graph with the independent variable as the x-axis.

Guiding Questions

How do we organize data so that it can be interpreted in a useful way?

How can data we collect be used to solve real world problems?

PBS Learning Media

After watching the video below on human performance and data design an experiment to test your own performance on a specific task and make an appropriate graph:

Pick a Chemistry PhET below, define an independent/dependent variable, collect data in a data table, and make the appropriate graph in Excel that uses data:

Use your own Synergy data to make an Excel bar graph of your test scores in each class.

Create a bar graph using Excel showing the types of birds that you can see from your window.

Data:  The characteristics or information, usually numerical, that are collected through observation.

Scatter Plot:  A graph in which the values of two variables are plotted along two axes, the pattern of the resulting points revealing any correlation present.

Bar Graph:  A diagram in which the numerical values of variables are represented by the height or length of lines or rectangles of equal width.

x-axis: The principal or horizontal axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates.

y-axis:  The secondary or vertical axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates.
