This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that you work on. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help you practice and master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another.

Week 2: April 6-April 10

 STEM Objectives: Students will be able to: 
  • explainengineering. 
  • explain what an Engineer does.
  • determinesteps of engineering. 
  • describe the hallmarks of engineering: make something work then make it work better. 

Lessons and Student Instructions 

Lesson 1:  Watch the videos about Engineering, take notes (Cornell notes if you know them) and answer the questions. 


Read the article “Engineering Basics” and answer the questions.

Design an invention to make an everyday task easier or more automated. Build, test and redesign your invention if possible. 


Engineering - Process of improving something or making something new; usually useful or a tool. 

Requirements - What is needed from the tool. 

Constraints - Limits placed upon the engineering project; usually money, time and materials.  

Design - Process of drawing, describing and modeling in engineering. 

Build - Taking the design and making it. 

Testing - Taking the built object and subjecting it to various uses. 

Evaluation - Judging if the new build satisfies the requirements. 

Iteration - Going through the process again and again.
