How to Use This Page

This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week's learning at home. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that your child will be able to do. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help your child master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another. These activities fit into the Sample Dailly Schedule.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Your child DOES NOT have to complete all activities listed for each subject.
  • Activities have been identified to give your child choice and variety.
  • Your child's teacher may suggest other activities more appropriate for your child.

Continue your journal and write three things you learned about an ecosystem. Illustrate the pages in your journal. Remember, you can make a journal with any paper you have by folding few pieces together and making them into a book.

Projects

Make it rain: shaving cream, jar, water, food coloring.

  1. Fill the jar almost to the top with water.
  2. Cover the top with a "cloud" of shaving cream.
  3. Drop food coloring into the cloud until the color starts "raining" into the water below. This is how rain works too. The water collects in the cloud until there is too much, and then it leaks through, forming rain.

Ecosystem Matching Game

  1. Fold a paper into nine parts.
  2. Cut them apart.
  3. On three of those pieces, draw animals from different ecosystems
  4. On the other three pieces draw three plants that grow in different ecosystems
  5. On the last three pieces draw pictures of the climate in the three ecosystems.
  6. Challenge a family to match them up.
  7. Using a timer see who can match them the quickest.

Vocabulary

Atmosphere- a mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth.

Atmósfera- capa gaseosa que rodea la Tierra y otros cuerpos celestes.

Weather- the current conditions of the atmosphere at a place and time. Some characteristics of weather are temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, wind, and atmospheric pressure. Weather conditions are temporary and change frequently.

Clima- conjunto de condiciones atmosféricas que caracterizan una región.

Precipitation- any moisture that falls to Earth, such as rain, snow, hail, sleet, or mist

Precipitación- agua procedente de la atmósfera, y que en forma sólida o líquida se deposita sobre la superficie de la tierra

Global Climate- the average climate of the entire Earth.

Clima global- el clima promedio de toda la Tierra.

Climate Change- a significant change in the climate over time.

Cambio climático-cambio previsible en el clima terrestre provocado por la acción humana que da lugar al efecto invernadero y al calentamiento global.

Adaption- the act of changing to fit into new situation.

Adaptación- acción y efecto de adaptar o adaptarse.
