How to Use This Page

This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week's learning at home. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that your child will be able to do. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help your child master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another. These activities fit into the Sample Dailly Schedule.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Your child DOES NOT have to complete all activities listed for each subject.
  • Activities have been identified to give your child choice and variety.
  • Your child's teacher may suggest other activities more appropriate for your child.

Grades 4-5 Band and Orchestra - Week Five

Elementary Band & Orchestra Music Activities Board
Weeks 5
5-4 through 5-10
Developed by the TUSD Music Staff

Every week, the TUSD Fine and Performing Arts Department will share a new activity board for our
at-home musicians. Make sure to share your music learning with your teacher and let them know if you would like more musical enrichment experiences!

Pick two or more activities to do! Share what you did with your teacher.

Music Theory
See how many different words you can create using only the musical alphabet (A B C D E F G). There are over 50! Write 5-10 of these words as notes on a musical staff.

Guided Listening
Sit quietly outside. Listen carefully to the sounds around you. Draw pictures of 4 things outside that you hear making music or musical sounds.

Practice at Home
Practice a short portion of any music. After playing/singing it one time, try to improve something using practice ideas your teacher uses in class. Send a recording of your practice session to your teacher if you can and share what you tried to improve.

Movie Music
John Williams has written music for more than 100 movies, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Jurassic Park, and the Harry Potter movies. Watch a movie with John Williams’ music in it and listen how the music helps tell the story. Write a paragraph to explain what you heard in the movie music.

Interview/Discuss
Do a scavenger hunt around your house and write down any musical instrument or item that you find. How often is it used, who plays it, who does it belong to? If it is a musical instrument, have the person it belongs to perform for you!

Music Around Us
Look around your house to see what you can find to demonstrate different music sounds. Find something that makes: a high sound, a low sound, a loud sound, a soft sound, can sound fast, can sound slow, made of metal and can be tapped, and made of wood and can be tapped.

Write/Respond
Using the sounds you found in the “Music Around Us” box (to the left), create sound effects to go with your favorite story. Record your story with these sound effects or perform it for a family member.

Perform/Compose
Using the sounds you found in the “Music Around Us” box (to the left), make up 5 different rhythm patterns. Write the patterns down, then use 2 or 3 different sounds to perform each pattern. Share your performance with your teacher if you can!
