How to Use This Page

This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week's learning at home. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that your child will be able to do. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help your child master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another. These activities fit into the Sample Dailly Schedule.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Your child DOES NOT have to complete all activities listed for each subject.
  • Activities have been identified to give your child choice and variety.
  • Your child's teacher may suggest other activities more appropriate for your child.

Please email or call your teacher.

Middle School Band and Orchestra - Week Six

Middle School Band & Orchestra Music Activities Board
Week 6
5-11 through 5-17
Developed by the TUSD Music Staff

Every week, the TUSD Fine and Performing Arts Department will share a new activity board for our
at-home musicians. Make sure to share your music learning with your teacher and let them know if you would like more musical enrichment experiences!

Pick two or more activities to do! Share what you did with your teacher.

Draw a music staff, clef, key signature, and time signature of your choice. Create a 4 to 8 measure melody for your instrument using rhythms that you know. If possible, record yourself playing your melody. Share your recording and music with your teacher.

Guided Listening
If you could play a different musical instrument, what would it be? Why did you pick that instrument? Listen to some recordings online of professionals performing on that instrument. Share your answers and the recordings with your teacher

Practice at Home
Practice a short portion of any music. After playing/singing it one time, try to improve something using practice ideas your teacher uses in class. Send a recording of your practice session to your teacher if you can and share what you tried to improve.

Movie Music
Danny Elfman has composed lots of music for film and television including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman (1989), and The Simpsons. Watch a movie with Danny Elfman’s music in it and listen how the music helps tell the story. Write a paragraph to explain what you heard in the movie music.

Create an alphabet book of musical terms, composers, and instruments. Pick a term/composer/instrument for each letter of the alphabet, define that term in your own words, and then draw a picture of that term. Share your ABC book with your teacher!

Music Around Us
Fill bottles or jars with various levels of water. What sounds can you make if you tap the bottles? Add more water? Take out water? Can you play a song? Record your performance and share with your teacher!

There are 5 different families of musical instruments -String, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion & Keyboard. Can you list 2 instruments in each family and what they have in common?

Perform a short concert for your family (one to three short pieces). Follow up with a self-evaluation of the performance. What went well? What would you have liked to do better? Share a recording and your answers with your teacher.
