How to Use This Page

This page contains a "menu" of lessons and activities for this week's learning at home. You will find the objectives: the specific skills that your child will be able to do. Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help your child master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another. These activities fit into the Sample Dailly Schedule.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Your child DOES NOT have to complete all activities listed for each subject.
  • Activities have been identified to give your child choice and variety.
  • Your child's teacher may suggest other activities more appropriate for your child.

Week 2 April 6 – April 10

Students will be able to: 

  • learn and use important vocabulary about world migration and immigration in reading passages, videos and worksheets. 
  • use subordinate conjunctions to complete sentences. 
  • respond to questions about migration in writing, speaking and various media. 

Reading & Writing 

Choose one or two articles. Read each article from newsela.com, and complete the quiz and writing activity.

Listen to these clips about taking a trip on the bus and traveling on an airplane from Randall’s Listening Lab, write your answers and share them with your teacher.

Do two or three of the following: 

Writing Project – Continue daily journal entry by writing what you do every day (Don’t know what to write? Write a one-page diary entry or letter from the point of view of a child migrant or refugee traveling alone.) 

Listening & Speaking Project – Interview someone you live with or a relative over the phone. Pick someone who has immigrated to the United States, or even someone who has moved a lot.  Think of 10 interesting questions to ask them about their experience. (For example: What was it like to move somewhere completely new? Were you alone, or did you travel with others?)

Art Project – In the Newsela article you read, Taylor Diaz wants to welcome immigrants. Taylor Diaz says,  

“They are our neighbors. They should be treated fairly.”  

For an art project, create a poster, welcoming immigrants to their new country.  Use any size of paper or create one digitally on the computer through Microsoft Word.  



Migrant (N): a person who goes from one place to another especially to find work 

Refugee (N): someone who has been forced to leave a country because of war or for religious or political reasons 

Emergency (N): an unexpected and usually dangerous situation that calls for immediate action 

Immigrate (V): to come to a country to live there — often + to 

Asylum Seeker (N): a person who has left their home country as a political refugee and is seeking asylum in another. 

Kit (N)[count]: a set of tools or supplies that a person uses for a particular purpose or activity
