Site Council Facts

  • What is a site council?
The school site council is an elected group of teachers, parents, classified employees, and community leaders that works with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets. The members of the site council are generally elected by their peers in their constituency. Community stakeholders come together for the purposes of promoting student achievement and the school’s image and positive impact on the community.
  • When are meetings?
Meetings are generally on the second Thursday of the month at 4:15p in the Collier Library. The meetings’ agenda and minutes are posted in the central hallway of Collier no less than twenty-four hours in advance of each meeting. They are also available on our school’s website.
  • What does site council do?
The exact duties of school site councils vary from state to state and even between districts in the same state, but site councils generally either make decisions or advise the principal on the tax credit budget and the academic or school improvement plan. In addition to academic planning, many site councils are also responsible for making decisions about parent engagement, safety, and discipline.

Over the course of a year, a typical council might consider the goals of the school or district and then work with the principal to evaluate the school's progress toward those goals. In this evaluation, the council might consider school test scores, attendance and discipline records, parent surveys and input from students.
  • How can I get onto site council?
Elections are advertised, generally in the spring. Our terms are two years but may be consecutive.
  • How does a meeting work?
Minutes and agenda posted no later than 24 hours before a meeting. We may not discuss anything other than what’s on the agenda, but we always begin our meetings with a call to the audience. During this time, audience members may talk about anything they wish in an orderly fashion to the site council.
