Essential Question for the Year

How do power, fear, belonging, forgiveness, and possessions shape who we are and the choices we make? 

Unit 1: Extending Freedom’s Reach
Quarter 1

We explore challenging survival stories, analyzing how central themes emerge and are refined by specific details, and learn how to write persuasive arguments based on what we discover.  Next, our exploration deepens as we consider a different, yet equally compelling, aspect of human experience.

Unit 2: Inside the Nightmare
Quarter 2

We explore the allure of fear and how it captivates the human imagination, analyzing how the central idea about fear's appeal emerges and is shaped by specific details within informational texts. 

While fear often isolates, our next exploration delves into the contrasting yet interconnected themes of belonging and exclusion, examining their societal impact.

Unit 3: Ousiders & Outcasts
Quarter 3

We examine the social dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, analyzing how central ideas about belonging emerge and are refined by specific details within informational texts, and engage in routine writing tasks over time to explore the significance of feeling like an outcast and its consequences. 

After exploring the profound impact of belonging and exclusion, we focus on the complexities of human conflict and the choices we make between forgiveness and vengeance.

Unit 4: Virtue & Vengeance
Quarter 3

We examine the complexities of conflict and resolution, analyzing how central ideas about forgiveness or vengeance emerge and are refined by specific details within informational texts, and engage in routine writing tasks over varied time frames to explore the factors that lead to these outcomes.  We then shift our inquiry from the complexities of conflict and resolution to a more personal examination, exploring the relationship between material possessions and our individual identities.

Unit 5: All that Glitters
Quarter 4

We explore the relationship between material possessions and personal identity, analyzing how themes or central ideas about values and desires emerge and are refined by specific details within literary texts, and engage in routine writing tasks over varied time frames to examine how the things we own reflect our inner selves.
