Essential Question for the Year

How do our perceptions of our society, community, language, place, fear, and change shape our identities and drive our actions? 

Unit 1: Writing Freedom: Words that Shaped a Nation
Quarter 1

We explore how ideas of freedom shape a nation, analyzing how two or more central ideas about freedom's evolution interact and build on one another in powerful words and documents. We examine how these texts contribute to the creation and evolution of a society, producing clear, coherent writing.

Unit 2: The Individual & Society: Fitting In or Standing Out?
Quarter 2

We explore the relationship between the individual and society, analyzing how two or more central ideas about self-expression and community interact and build on one another. We write to consider and examine the importance of both self-expression and community.

Unit 3: Leaders & Visionaries: Charting a New Path
Quarter 3

We examine the role of communication in driving social change, considering how leaders and visionaries use words to inspire action and shape perspectives. We will now consider how the personal expression and needs of a community interact.  

We now shift our focus to the relationship between people and place.

Unit 4: Grit & Grandeur: The Importance of Place
Quarter 3

We explore the relationship between people and place, analyzing how two or more central ideas about surroundings impact our sense of self and understanding of the world interact and build on one another within informational texts.  From understanding how our physical environments shape us, we now turn inward to examine fear.

Unit 5 The Threat of “The Other”: Facing Our Fears
Quarter 4

We delve into the inner workings of fear and how it shapes our perceptions and drives our actions in the face of perceived threats. Our exploration includes a range of literary texts from diverse cultures and time periods, allowing us to consider fear's universal forms.

Unit 6: The Past Meets the Present: Navigating Change
Additional Material

We examine the dynamics of change, exploring how individuals and communities navigate the tension between tradition and innovation. We analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. Our study includes a wide range of literary texts from diverse cultures and time periods, allowing us to understand how these dynamics play out in various contexts.
