12th Grade ELA Course

Essential Question for the Year

How do our experiences and the world around us affect who we are and what we believe?

Unit 1: Forging a Hero – Warriors & Leaders
Quarter 1

We investigate the importance of heroes, citing textual evidence to support our analysis of informational texts. We will then create support and arguments for our opinion on the essential question: What makes a hero?

Having examined the qualities and impact of heroes, we now broaden our perspective to understand how texts about social reform ignite change and empower individuals within society.

Unit 2: Reflecting on Society
Quarter 2

We explore texts on social reform, analyzing how central ideas interact and build on one another as we evaluate our understanding of the power of literary works on society.

Moving from the impact of literary works on society, we now shift our focus inward to explore self-awareness. We'll consider how individuals define their identities and embark on the journey of self-discovery.

Unit 6: Exile & Belonging
Additional Material

We use experiences and knowledge to describe the concept of "home," citing strong and thorough textual evidence to support our analysis of various informational texts. We analyze a case in which the author's or speaker's premises, claims, and evidence are challenged by other sources or in which multiple perspectives on a topic are presented. In small groups, we will then co-construct a statement articulating the feeling home inspires.
